Strings in Greece
Friday 25th May to Sunday 3rd June 2018
Enjoy a unique musical experience on the Greek island of Kythira, the southernmost of the Ionian islands. Unspoilt by mass tourism, Kythira offers a rich variety of beaches, villages and countryside. Greece in May and early June is a revelation to those who only know the country in summer – the air is fresh and all the hills and meadows are green and covered in wild flowers.
The music making mirrors Greek island life, with rehearsals in the morning and early evening, leaving the afternoons for other activities.
Our mainstay venue used for rehearsals and the midweek concert by the tutors, is an open-air amphitheatre www.zeidoros.gr only a stone’s throw from the sea in Kapsali .
This year's tutors, Ruth Gibson (viola) and self-proclaimed 'diva' cellist Zoe Martlew zoemartlew.com/ are both recognised world-class performers, as well as both being great teachers - encouraging, informative and inspirational at all times. In addition to their teaching and conducting roles they will be giving a concert of their own during the course of the week
Year by year we continue to build on our partnership with the island's wind band, the Potamos Philharmoniki with memorable joint performances as part of our final concert.
Each year we organise a 'beach meal' in a different island location. Last year this was in a sea front restaurant in Agia Pelagia in the north west of the island, with tables set out on the beach, shaded by tamarisk trees, with views over the Straits of Malea to the mountains of the southern Peloponnese.
Additional activities We arrange at least one (optional) walk during the course of the week, take a sea trip in a glass bottom boat (when it is available) and, subject to demand, cover other areas of interest such as Greek cooking and dancing. The visual arts option takes a themed approach, working towards a public show in the local art gallery
Fees cover tuition, rehearsal costs, self catering accommodation for 9 nights (Friday 25th May to Saturday 2nd June inclusive), the beach meal, travel to any organised music activities in other island locations and transfers to and from the airport/ferry port on the Friday / Saturday arrival days and on Sunday departure day. Extra nights accommodation can be arranged either side of the course. There are two cellos and one bass available to hire
